“Glen’s Bad Dream” was painted during the summer of 2020, at a time when much of Los Angeles was locked down and the world felt uncertain. During those long days at home, painting became one of my greatest sources of comfort, inspiration, and escape. As a lifelong fan of horror films, I had always wanted to create a Nightmare on Elm Street painting, but rather than paint a traditional portrait of Freddy Krueger, I was drawn to one of the film’s most memorable moments: Johnny Depp’s character, Glen, drifting off to sleep moments before his tragic fate. This scene held special meaning for me. Nightmare on Elm Street was the very first film in which I saw Johnny Depp, long before he became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors. Revisiting that early role felt nostalgic and personal, while also celebrating the beginning of an extraordinary career. Rather than recreating the famous aftermath of Glenn’s death, I chose to imagine the moment between waking and dreaming-the instant Freddy catches him asleep. I wanted viewers to experience the tension, curiosity, and surreal atmosphere that made Wes Craven’s dream world so unique. My fascination with Nightmare on Elm Street goes back to childhood. When the original film premiered on HBO, I was told I was too young to watch it. Naturally, I snuck out to see what everyone was watching. My first glimpse of Freddy Krueger terrified me, but it also sparked a fascination that has stayed with me ever since. More than any other slasher franchise, Nightmare on Elm Street captured my imagination because of its dream concept. The idea that fear could follow you into sleep felt both terrifying and strangely magical. That blend of fantasy and horror continues to inspire me today.
